In our times can get a better sense of product reality and why people pay money for a particular thing than in the past. For instance was surprised when music industry at first refused to sell digital copies of music over the web, as they relied much on its distribution through physical copies, like with CD's. There was a lot of distribution money that went away when people like me could just download a song we liked.
But why would anyone assume I'd just steal the song rather than pay for it?
Some people DID assume that ALL humans are thieves and took Steve Jobs to even let people legally buy and download when he pioneered with iTunes. Today of course it should seem silly to think no one would pay for a digital song regardless of how distributed simply because LOTS of people do.
There was a delusion that physical security which is good is key to profits, as if no human can be trusted not to steal if that is not there. That really messed up lots and slowed web business development tremendously.
Our world is slowly figuring out idea marketplace reality. Web enables much, MUCH more.
(The actual flow of money in general is the easy part.)
Physical products are of course important but now also is the software that can keep them running properly where you can have operating system costs buried in the cost of the device or free like with those that use open source software. The cost of developing the software when free is born by an open source community.
Global community provides the basic framework for the web with open source or nothing else would be working now, but more focus is on the people making money various ways.
The most basic workable model in that it can be broadly replicated globally for an idea transaction is when a consumer comes across an idea product, and pays through an intermediary, who distributes the product over the web, on behalf of an idea producer.
Talk that with: Abstracting the payment intermediary
You might think that the most basic workable model is simply paying the producer direct. But have a ready analogy which will use throughout this post, which is paying for a ride. So paying direct is like if you just go find someone you pay to drive you around. (Good luck with that one.) Rideshare companies are actually simply payment intermediaries.
The point of a payment intermediary is--business trust.
The payment intermediary can determine if a person is a legitimate customer which includes ability to pay and also can include a tendency to behave. And can handle receipt of funds from customers.
While for a potential customer the payment intermediary should also ensure a safe environment as well as reception of the desired good or service--like a safe, comfortable ride to the desired destination.
Oh yeah, also the payment intermediary is an important source of information needed for all parties. Where must be objective as well but why wouldn't be?
Like yeah with rideshare is brilliant to collect ratings for both the driver and the rider.
Dropping of the distribution costs is where you find the HUGE web difference. Like I can write a book, and the cost of distribution of the digital version can be a pittance in comparison to the costs for a physical version.
A complete marketplace of ideas would be a place on the web where potential customers could go to payment intermediaries who would connect them with producers of desired product or service.
Like with a physical marketplace where there is a concentration of goods and services at a physical location for the convenience of customers and businesses.
We just had SOME things that distributed in established marketplaces through physical products where there was natural focus, as started talking music industry and CD's. But the web doesn't care about such things really.
So? Was something information distributed in a physical product before, but now can move across the web freed of its physical carrier.
Web can open things up vastly and yes, include products for sale around things like with music and video, and also go beyond.
When am looking at gaps with the current models on the web, am thinking is with payment intermediaries who can help someone like me with an idea product. Maybe should just create such a company myself, eh?
Covered a lot of ground though. Like say you LOVE driving people around but rideshare companies didn't exist! What could you do?
Maybe you could start some business convincing people to let you drive them.
Oh, or become a taxi driver, right? But what if didn't want to jump through their hoops? Which may be part of why taxi companies have been fighting so hard.
Reality is: most folks are funneled into established systems which can actually be VERY dysfunctional for work.
Web has the potential to vastly disrupt those prior systems by giving more options based simply on ability to do a job.
Is like the business part can be separated, like with a rideshare company as I run that analogy into the ground. But seems so useful! Is readily familiar. So yeah, most of the business part of driving? Rideshare companies handle, so the driver can just, be polite and drive.

Benefits of discovery versus pay
For so long thought of myself as working at discovery which is lots of fun. Where naturally at first was also working a traditional job for income. But kind of missed on that transition needed as became global, as reporting by others was not there that I noticed. Where have to hedge.
Like my blogs have an attention reality as reported by various web measures, which show yeah, there had to be a communicating about, and of, my ideas by others all over the world. So much mystery for me there though, with most of that still hidden. Am not sure why.
But regardless was focused on traditional sources! And also focused on the establishment for recognized authority! Which was not a mistake. Web is so new really. So was more focused on well established arenas and following their rules.
Which was the way to go. How else to know certain things? Now am more interested in our emerging ways.
Is remarkable how global one can be with information precious as to who and why--as to that attention your ideas can bring. But also it is gratifying and I think more so, as I look with more and more suspicion upon reporting where money rules.
If people are paid to lie, how much lying might they do? If they can get away with it? Being able myself to personally probe into reality have been disconcerted when find, there is none of substance.
Yet there must hedge especially as is very difficult. And love being a fan, so is not right to talk too much about things that actually puzzle me much.
Also was brought up a certain way and in essence being forced to work for one's self to a large extent seems like a conceit to me, as if looking for that great thing with an excuse.
Regardless am accepting more of my attention reality which means can be more fun, I think. Discovery at best gave me answers to things where had SO many questions, with interests in so many places. And that does include money. With discovery found out, what is money? How do people actually make money?
But also, very importantly: What is success? How do we know?
And money and success can be very much unrelated actually.
With a global readership have global reach, which means global information flows to me, constantly.
YOUR interest rules much, whether you realize it or not. As in helps mark out much as audiences help create a certain web reality, as that meaning of, to rule fascinates me now, as is how you get a ruler. A physical ruler to measure, is ruled as in laying out parallel lines. To rule, literally means to mark out parallel lines.
Our interest as human beings more and more marks out the zones of our best information, and web authority helps us find. And how YOU choose to spend your attention? Can help you, me and others find ever better things, in so many ways.
Highly recommend if you can: Rule your own interests best you can my friend, whomever you are around the world. As you mark out your reality with your interests, we all can get to better content.
And will work harder now to discover ways to gain appropriate pay for my best efforts, with a greater appreciation for much better understood. Discovery helped me massively.
Our need to understand as human beings intrigues me often: Do you know why?
What makes you learn?
Our particular individual needs to understand what does define us, am sure.

Getting attention and money reality
More and more realize how much money is a recent invention. Have actually talked MY musings on how money gets introduced into the global system and is not intuitive. I focus on collateralized bank loans as needed or cannot get it done. If that is wrong, then, oh well. Makes sense to me.
If true though, modern money is an invention of the 20th century, which kind of makes it interesting to consider what was around before, which is a fun subject. But in essence money was directly backed by SOMETHING, like gold, while in our times...well I've talked money lots.
Attention from your fellow humans though is as old as humanity.
There has been an attention industry though which also arrived relatively recently when consider span of human civilization. That money-making attention industry found that people could be convinced to buy things when shown advertising along with other desired content. Idea was that enough people would buy something to pay for the distribution of the information with capital intensive means.
Advertising is being re-engineered by web reality.
On the web there is a vast global infrastructure which costs quite a bit actually, where human beings paid upfront the costs of the distribution system, which allows people like me to get free distribution of information across it. There is a cost there but am not having to pay it, despite having readers all over the globe.
So consider, in prior systems, people paid the distributors of content other humans valued, in order for that information to flow, but in our times that is unnecessary for the web. You STILL have to pay quite a bit to distribute through other systems but is a legacy situation.
Like, if I'm interested in learning something new for lots of reasons where can all be personal am more likely to get needed information NOW with a web search than by any other means. Even if that subject is talked on some other legacy medium, is unlikely to be convenient to me. Like I may notice when is scheduled, or is subject of an upcoming edition of something or other.
And people paying for that distribution on legacy systems?
Are more and more likely looking at an audience which either doesn't know better, is just doing things out of habit, or maybe does prefer the couch potato reality, of sitting back and letting others decide. Or maybe something else. Who knows. Who cares really if you've shifted primarily to web focus as I have.
But yeah then is a question of what pays for directing attention on the web? Am thinking, nothing. More and more do not think you can direct attention on the web much.
And advertising models are still evolving. But yeah, even if you DO find yourself moved by an ad or something promotional on the web, your buying power does NOT pay for the cost of distribution.
So on the web people must be paying for cost of content, which was shouldered by others in legacy industries.
Like now streaming services for video, are increasingly producing their own content.
Yeah that makes sense. So web shifts payment from paying for distribution with capital intensive means, to needing to pay for content, while actually there are still distribution costs.
Like with video streaming there is the cost of the streaming which at those scales does show up, as well as the infrastructure needed to stream to millions, and lots of figuring out how to recommend best. Still those are negligible as a percentage of costs per person compared to the primary costs in legacy industries for distribution of content.
With streaming video on the web can get a better handle on cost of content. And we DID pay lots extra for the delivery of content. Now more focus is on paying for the content direct.
Then you get to people like me who like to put up content, where cost of a global infrastructure is being born by HUGE corporations like here Google is the primary, which is also a part of Alphabet.
Presumably Google has some gain from Blogger and letting people like me talk about a variety of subjects, without being charged.
While am comforting myself that getting global attention does not necessarily connect to money in and of itself. Still is not an easy thing to do.
With a better handle on how I do it, which has taken quite a few years to learn, am also learning how others do it.
And reality is: not many people can pull global attention with ANYTHING that they do, consistently, year after year after year.
For me though is easier than not with skills now developed, as I like writing posts like this one. Is fun.

Things can get SO messed up
Good news is that the web enables people to communicate better and share important ideas all over the world. But the challenging news is: that can really mess you up, and is important to realize ahead of time.
So you can be prepared. Or try to be.
And also realize, much is being figured out, so is VERY hard often to get a feel for your situation. Life must continue, regardless. Where with myself found had to drop some ways of looking at things from the past, while gleefully grabbing hold of better perspective of the now.
Like yeah, am world's latest major discoverer. And happily shared math things of great importance across the web and watched as things changed. And members of the math establishment apparently learned they could, at least near as I can tell so far, ignore properly acknowledging. Where still am not sure how they're pulling that one off. Am finding it finally irritating again. For a bit was cool with it, after the past rages.
Yeah and again am glad is math. So can prove things with absolute certainty. Which yeah would check and re-check and check again. Wish to be logical, but do not trust myself. Supposedly could trust others. That is not what reality demonstrated.
One thing with their continued success against easy mathematical proof may be people thinking that hey, if what I have is so important? How could experts in the math field possibly ignore? Yeah, see the Catch-22? I did YEARS ago.
If people struggling to hold on to advantages from the past can do that to me, when is easy to prove am world's latest major discoverer, then imagine what they can do to others.
Wow, I actually have it better. At least I can prove beyond any doubt. Others might not have that perfect assurance.
Actually is interesting that math folks would APPARENTLY fight like they have. Have to hedge much. So much is about NOT doing what is expected if presented with something new and wonderful that is mathematical. Is not like I need to do much but watch and wonder. Fighting against mathematical truth? You cannot win. You can delay the inevitable, but human beings are going to go with what actually works. Is just a matter of time.
It still seems so strange. Web disruption in that way is not intuitive to me. That dedication AGAINST might evolve as well. Then am sure would push the web to evolve more in reaction. That seems cool at least envisioning a more dynamic process, of action and reaction, with web evolution.
Am looking at arenas where people apparently have decided they no longer care what it takes and they will personally stop web revolutions if they can.
I find that attitude intriguing. And yeah, but with what methods? Find am struggling at imagining.
The web apparently is aware. And how the web reacts to such things? Can be kind of hard to understand as well. So will try to give MY guesses as how web reacts. And I talk the web kind of as an entity when am not sure to what extent may be. But is more fun.
But yeah, so maybe those HUGE social media numbers were not telling us what we thought, though I believe that having millions of followers on social media IS significant. But our belief helped drive growth--of social media. Are we more important to the web? Or is growth more important?
My view is that growth and continued evolution of the web is more important.
And I suspect the web would agree.
So yeah, expect harsh reality. Look to have things that are great on the one hand bring massive challenges on the other. And get very wary when it comes to money things. My analysis is that the web hasn't even bothered solving the money problem, as what's the motivation?
While for ME, there is HUGE motivation, and have learned to share more. Like yesterday updated my post talking what is now a situation of having been evicted. That is painful. Why share? Helps me process and also yeah, you can check me on so much that I say which is important. That information is relevant in understanding my situation as well.
Am more convinced there is a war that has erupted which is futile. Yeah, I know, resistance is futile, is classic. But the web does not care as these people are unaware of how much the web already knows. Am looking at things that simply look naive to me, until I realize: money is their focus.
So we need to figure out the money problem. And by we, mean web folks who for a long time have just been happily discovering and exploring new possibility. While others may have been ruthlessly trying to hold on to the world that was.
Have talked money much so noting a shift here as in the past thought was simply my concern to figure out how to make money. Did not occur to me also needed to consider nasty humans fighting to keep web people impoverished, as why would that occur to me?
It is such silly behavior if true. Ok, so there is a slight adjustment to considering that possibility.
And expect things to be messed up on the web if you start getting some success measures. Like with me, with MASSIVE global reach, and puny other things. Also be suspicious more on monetary matters and less trusting. Considering the possibility of short-sighted human beings fighting a losing battle which messes up your finances in the now.
The web adventure? May be simply heating up. Is cool. Is just more knowledge really. Gotta love it.
Sure know I do.

Value, market and the web
My view has long been that the web gives you the benefit of easy, wide distribution of information, which for an information product or service should be great! However, of course with such easy also there is more competition, which I also think is great, for consumers, as long as people can find best quality.
Web authority helps there greatly which for most is simply search!
Much to help then in producing great business for information on the web, but where is it?
Considering things as typical on the web now, still appears that money is being used more to try and capture people's attention with an endless war of trying to push ads with mass market approach, which people naturally endlessly try to avoid.
Yet the web has the potential for so much smarter.
Also with my own things have the oddity of global attention in a community way, which has been so separate from money, am finding have to talk it--and solve the problem.
So what is going on?
Well let's say I have a product which primarily involves information, like software or a picture, or a movie, and I want to let people determine quality and pay me if they think is a quality product, how can they?
Relentlessly global systems on the web do NOT give people the ability to pay after determining quality first.
Yet people do that all the time--for purchases made off the web. They even use the web to help check and to help find quality things, to go buy something like at a store.
Where that is so obvious am more and more suspicious.
Who are the people helped by the system as it stands? Money people and people with big corporations where more and more are working to dominate the web.
Where the web can simply push back. Web can destroy any corporation with its current level of power and is getting stronger. Or less dramatically, customers can rapidly find out the truth through the web, and what business can survive if bulk of its customers abandon it?
Like consider movie industry in my country, discovering can no longer rely on made-up arbitrary rules for movies, but needs to make movies audiences actually want. Because social media helps us know.
The marketplace of ideas is coming am sure. But lots of financial misery too often in the meantime for people with quality products and services who try to rely on web primarily now, as keep finding are forced to money people, who try to exploit them ruthlessly from what I've noticed.
The worst, in my opinion, of the money people work to turn those they control to a telemarketer mentality--pushing relentless promotion in demands for attention BEGGING people to pay them for things, or threatening them if they do not PAY UP.
That does not lead to great business experience. And again, notice where can find such business behavior OFF the web, eh? Like where. Will ponder and maybe update. Probably some huckster zone.
Is interesting, so I study. And THAT is the full explanation. The web has the potential but the frameworks have to be established so that once you figure out quality of a product or service FIRST on the web THEN you can pay the person who actually is providing.

Is interesting, so I study. And THAT is the full explanation. The web has the potential but the frameworks have to be established so that once you figure out quality of a product or service FIRST on the web THEN you can pay the person who actually is providing.

Better defining effort
Firmly believe must do what one loves, and if find an audience shares interest, is great! But regardless do the things you love. While also most, like me, must find an audience, if only of one, for doing things for others for employment purposes, with remuneration. That is, most people need to have a paying job. Great if can coincide with what you love doing, of course.
And better defining efforts as to how that works has helped me. As grew up taught to just get a job, and maybe there was the possibility for getting beyond mundane of the usual, of finding other realms, which was actually mysterious like, how do you get discovered? Where now talk of those as preconceived notions. Were from lessons learned before possible in our times, when web can enable you to reach an audience, and can be a global one. But then what?
When you just want to get a job, you look for available ones through various means, endeavor to get an interview, and work to convince some person or persons you can do the work required. Generally you're looking at working for a business entity with a superior position in terms of establishment, money and other resources including infrastructure.
With the web, so much structure is abstract, if it exists at all.
Plenty of mechanisms for the remuneration, especially for employment purposes are still built for the world that was.
While modern money is an evolved wonder, allowing you to get a return on favors done for others, as an abstraction I claim is a social IOU backed up by society. Evolved wonder it may be, money regardless I theorize, flows in very distinct ways, where have a money flows reference post, which I DO check routinely. These abstractions are ones I try to use.
One HUGE problem on the web is the trust factor, as you can want someone to do something for you, or be wanted, but then there is structure in the world I no longer take for granted. I study it now.
One abstraction introduced recently addressing that area is the abstract payment intermediary, where some business entity in the middle facilitates transactions around flows of ideas.
Ideas can flow easily on the web. That part we know.
Having a system around those ideas, with buyers and sellers, and proper business, with as high a level of efficiency, trust and goodwill as can be found off the web, is I believe, a work in progress.

How discovery shifted my money focus
There was definitely a profit motive for me in chasing math discovery early on, which I clearly stated back then. My idea was that maybe could find something with modern problem solving techniques which had been missed before, which have often noted, which should also make me wealthy, like with a book deal about my story.
Which to me isn't even a big deal now, but along the way, lost my profit motive, and even lost my money focus which is good, as ran into consequences that made it greatly more difficult to make money as I had. Which have explained recently as an understandably large business risk. I'm read all over the world, just haven't monetized that well.
That discovery pushed me to shift as also learned did not actually have a good understanding of money in the first place. Just had taken it for granted one should try to get rich, and do so young. Like vaguely had plans to make my first million by age 30, which is just common as an idea in my country without it being clear why.
Going to focus on some key things which came to me while typing this post where is a bit of a surprise. I prefer to just let the writing flow then edit. There were things I thought would be here, which did not flow from the writing. And now as I edit, think learned quite a bit more than I expected from that as well. So here is what did make it.
Much shifted then when realized that money is just an abstraction for a favor, which is a social IOU backed up by society. Is like the concept of an I owe you, went from a paper kind of thing for a person, to paper for a country. Where is so cool how money gets introduced into the US system, as is not as intuitive as I thought. Have a post explaining on one of my blogs somewhere. That isn't the point of this post though. Maybe will find it later though. (Found it, from July 2015, on Lost in Commentary.)
With that idea in mind, yeah can explain how a cup of coffee from a friend is one kind of favor common to many who might share time with one over, and from a commercial establishment is great example when get benefit of the favor of a cup of coffee from a stranger, in exchange for money.
So I like to call it the stranger economy.
Where is so wild when you realize that in time it became accepted that the quality of that cup of coffee, and even the experience in the locale, could be so much greater that now more than likely would prefer to share with a friend in a commercial establishment often.
And the cost of getting that mood? Is priced into the things obtained there from that cup of coffee to other items might purchase along with it. Where yeah, my ideas on entertainment helped there as well, as understanding entertainment as a way to safely control mood, could find once again the idea of entertaining friends, as natural.
For a bit had entertainment separated in my mind from entertaining, as if were from very different places versus now realize are not, where one usually involves payment, yup to strangers, while the other tends to be more personal. And yet again, our expectations for paid entertainment quality are MUCH higher than from ourselves for our friends, unless you are that friend people think should be raucously entertaining.
Kind of feel for entertainers who maybe have friends who think they should bring their work with them to the party, if invited. Suspect they probably prefer that time off, to relax and safely enjoy quality time with others, if possible.
So with discovery lost my money focus. Better understood community focus. Then better understood the stranger economy which gets back to money. And now have worked to bring it all together in a way where makes sense, for me and possibly for others.
If makes more sense to you now? I succeeded with you which is a point of sharing. While also is important for me, which means the effort is worth it regardless.
There is a question that still bothers me though, which I may as well put out there, as I wonder, would I post differently if I were wealthy?

Web is where attention rules
Distribution is key to a simple understanding of much in modern world economy. And information distribution is where the web has taken over, for instance, removing the need for a physical CD, which shook the music industry, when audiences could just download music direct.
And our association between money and attention to the levels I took for granted growing up, in the 20th century, were ALL about that century, as inventions arrived where for a time, information distributed better through channels requiring heavy capitalization, like radio and television.
Global information distribution arrived with heavily capitalized areas, and then the web simplified, for many like myself, and solved the information distribution problem.
And money in its modern form arrived with the US Federal Reserve System, which is so effective, concepts it embodies took over global monetary systems.
Today people wonder how money gets created when they don't understand that system, and before it, money really was like an IOU to something physical considered valuable, like gold, versus in our times being more of an idea of value exchanged in the abstract.
You cannot have the modern global economy without money as invented in the 20th century.
Yet have considered the simple abstraction that money is a social IOU backed by society, as can be seen with US dollar which is a US federal reserve note backed by the US Government.
Money people were important for distribution in the heavily capitalized system, but today a music artist for example, can conceivably simply have fans download more or less direct and pay, with it questionable, what good are the money people in the middle then?
Worse, some of the greatest excesses in abuse of power can be seen with the money people, like movie producers whereas before information distribution on the web allowed a bigger picture, people were more likely focused on excesses from the celebrities. Now can get nasty picture about whomever.
Now we know as much about producers, agents and executives conceivably, as the web doesn't care.
Web is where attention rules. And unlike with a television station where powerful executives could control content to protect themselves and their friends from scrutiny, on the web? That information flows.
Getting proper remuneration for efforts is the social problem to be solved for the 21st century though, as BIG corporations still rule plenty of areas simply because the people who create lack the ability to get paid for their efforts, without a massive system designed simply to thwart thieves and piracy.
That will change am sure. My own analysis is that MOST people will return value received, when they make a buying decision, with proper remuneration, if is possible.
Such a simple sentence to type, but in those abstractions are a world to come, so much different from the one still here, which to me is just about social inertia, while people learn to choose better.
On the web is not so much about money as to value, but attention received, held and appreciated.
Here on the web? Attention rules.

Pondering the money conundrum
Having a connection in one's mind between success and money can make you feel like a fraud, talking the subject without much of it, but have readily admitted my probing into what money is, has been driven by a lack of it. Before didn't think about it as much, when usually had enough.
And web is great that way in terms of free things like Blogger where can have blogs up, without worrying about money there, and I use my blogs to work through problems. Often really am just thinking out loud, as putting up things public helps me focus, and dismiss bad ideas more quickly.
With the basic functional idea that money is a social IOU backed by society, could figure out much. Recognizing money flows had a HUGE impact for me as realized yeah, mostly flows through contracts. And then realized that pay on the job is really about services gaining remuneration under a contract, where noted recently it pays to be polite! Duh.
Having been someone who maybe took jobs too for granted in the past, have finally accepted that yes, while having global reach is really cool that can be a consideration for a business to NOT take you on as an employee. But also will admit got frustrated years ago wondering why wasn't making more money working with all that global reach I like to blab about so often. So figured that one out too.
Which results in my newest blog Seriously Commercial which is yet to actually go fully commercial, though consider the foundations laid. Gist of it is that looks like much of what I need to do is provide promotional services to others, but must do with best practices, which have worked out to my satisfaction. That was a lot of work on this blog as well, figuring out promotion.
In our times people want GREAT referral. Which to me means they both understand why you're promoting something to them, feel is a benefit, both before, during and after any business transaction, and with any part leading up to the possibility of it. Their choice, always. Is a huge thing really.
Also for me though there are significant requirements generated by learning to be global where probably benefited by keeping money separate to the extent I have. Makes you really picky. Oh, you thought the opposite maybe? (Who knows. Part of me is like, well if you're desperate for money, could force to NOT be picky, right?)
Well, consider how hard it is to maintain interest on our global stage with relentless competition for attention.
You think people and organizations that do it manage by NOT being picky?
For me, looking them over from my own perspective, appreciate I never realized fully just how picky they were! And to move in those circles, have to emulate. Otherwise even if managed to exploit situation for a bit, would watch it rapidly collapse.
(My ability to exploit would collapse. Would STILL get the global attention though. Oh.)
And you know what? Have kind of gotten used to the positive global attention. Sort of grows on you.
One brilliant thing though have learned is that success and money really weren't as connected as I thought. And thinking about success has helped me appreciate the people who get it done, for real, more than before. Success maybe is a moving target more than I realized, and is not so easy to grab with any one thing, like money. Which isn't putting down having it.
Main thing with money now realize, is having enough.

Work pushes polite
Much as a I like to note get attention driven towards me, less fun to admit that does not in and of itself bring money! Which surprised me a bit. Studying money carefully, concluded is a social IOU backed by society given best in exchange for a favor of some kind. Like someone favors you with a cup of coffee and you return the favor, by paying for it at a coffee shop. Money starts struggling the more important the thing! Which is also why it's easiest to make money with the least important things, and impossible with MOST important, like love.
And further realized that we work through contracts, which allow for what I call limited social trust, which outline the boundaries of what one will do in exchange for pay. In contrast for community, one should NOT be money motivated, and community work is harder to figure out pay, and for instance teachers, police and firefighters will do much that their pay does not and cannot cover. Just to pick one to highlight--for example a firefighter can die saving people from a fire.
For most people though, you do not work for community, like as police, or a firefighter or a teacher or a person at a state agency to name some general examples, at least not in my country. People working for community still need to be paid well, of course. But harder to figure out what is proper level.
When not working for your community? Get paid for ALL work you do on or for your job, please.
It is horrible though that some can be involved with unscrupulous people who may ask to see if you will naively do things outside your contract so that they can steal from you. I've been there. Found myself doing extra on a job for a manager who I now realize knew was being wrong. And I did not realize. Am smarter about it now.
Oh yeah, so work for most actually involves convincing strangers that you can do valued services under a contract, so you can follow such guidelines, in exchange for remuneration. That is, you get paid to do a job. And convincing strangers? Certainly helps when you are polite!
Should admit my ego which is stroked by endless attention from over 100 countries annually has had help being kept in check by me figuring out must behave to get work!
And that's a great thing too.

When stranger focus helped
Focusing on favors with money helped me understand it quickly, as for instance can have the favor of a cup of coffee from a friend, or can have a kind stranger just about anywhere in the world happily hand me a wonderful cup of coffee, in exchange for a social IOU, which is a promise to them they can get something for themselves later, we call money.
On this blog I have a fan approach, and have talked what I call fan or for favor on my new blog, where I can't talk names without getting paid for it, as a rule I made up for THAT blog. But here can talk company names without it meaning there is any connection to that company, and am a fan of Starbucks and also Peet's Coffee and Tea. Nice HUGE corporations that need no advertisement from me! But it fascinates me to realize just how far you can go with simple ideas.
So yes, you are a stranger when you walk through the door into a comforting and welcoming environment where strangers to you, happily brew you the best cup of coffee they can, or should, and you return the favor with money, by buying your drink. Brilliant!
Explained that way it's SO simple. So I like that example.
Community IS different. And you can now easily figure out why some people can make SO much more money, primarily from strangers, as that is how the system is focused, and others more community focused can make so much less, like teachers or firefighters.
The monetary system is NOT designed to show value.
Monetary system IS designed to trade favors--between strangers.
You can mess yourself up much in this life if you think monetary value shows things it does not.
Community still matters more actually. That requires some thought as well to figure out.
But I DO find it comforting.

My attention reality and commerce musings
The idea that where people direct attention can be related to commerce isn't at all new. While I've enjoyed for quite some time what I recognized as a sharing reality with what I put up public. Which here continues. But I finally decided to try and go commercial with a blog which is in the process, which I decided to call Seriously Commercial so I'd stay focused.
But I can't just set out to do things like they've been done, as for one thing I think that's less effective and also, it makes me feel uncomfortable. For instance I've noted that I don't get paid to talk anything, and have a position that if that changes I would inform where I put a page on Seriously Commercial to keep up with such things. Now of course notes no paid endorsements.
To some extent it feels odd to note such things but then again I do talk about global reach which potentially could be used for moneymaking purposes, I'd think. Have thought such things before! And finally interested enough to work at it a bit.
However, I believe that directing attention works best if done best as great referral.
Which to me is a very different way from like, a television show which will take ads with whatever system they use for picking them and I don't know. Do know have seen plenty of commercials where am like, oh no.
There are areas where I've focused more objectively like noting areas where I have measures from others showing interest, various things I've done have pulled from quite a few countries. It makes sense that with that information I have some ideas about what it takes to interest my fellow human beings all over planet Earth. So kind of convoluted.
Well at least that seems logical to me!
So yeah, I haven't done anything paid to direct attention, and created a blog to handle that kind of thing, which means other areas like here remain free to just do like I've been doing. Will note that am thinking of my Facebook page as a place to support the commercial blog, so it links to it.
To me it's really cool as to be someone who has demonstrated can get global attention for over a decade who has been very careful to be very wary on the money-side is comforting to me now.
SO many convoluted sentences in this post! But subject area makes me way uncomfortable.
My focus on sharing information as I have has been pragmatic to me.
And more than likely? Is how I got to learn so much. If I had been money focused earlier it's probable that would have changed lots and even now am not really money focused as sharing interesting things is so much more fun.

Connection reality stabilizes objectively
In my opinion you earn money when strangers return the favor for some legally provided product or service on a contract basis. Which I repeat a lot in various ways as is a point of view that has helped me, as for instance, think you can sing? Is one thing if friends and family tell you, and even if you get applause from a crowd, but there is an objective evaluation if strangers are buying your songs.
The contract is there for lots of reasons, and can be an unstated social contract, though people will do transactions often with written contracts without even noticing there is one. But for instance can cover things like returns.
However, outside of contracts regarding products or services, or expectation of a return on a favor, even to strangers, there is a VAST amount of human activity, which I tend to see as community oriented. For instance open source software is a global community activity, where money is not part of the contract, even though there are open source licenses.
And of course people do lots for each other at many levels and our species is a lot about connecting and having that support which can be such a great thing.
To me is comforting as money is such an easy objective measure that people can think it tells more than it does. If you DO earn money, where yeah I think if family or friends are paying you is not as certain, then you have in my opinion an objective measure that something you can provide is worth that to someone else. However, you can also do a lot of good for others, which is greatly appreciated, without money in return, and most of what human beings do for each other am sure is without expectation of monetary return.
The pendulum swung in a direction however that emphasized money as it greatly helps advance society. Splitting young people away from families and local communities in what can be a healthy way became part of growing up, as earning money can give an independence, and working involves at least initially usually working for strangers who can expand points of view.
Needing to earn money pushes people outside of their learned boundaries often, can give great opportunity, and give people an incentive to expand the boundaries of human experience in positive ways, though also yeah, can go negative as well.
Thanks to money human beings are pushed to think of strangers not just as some potentially dangerous other, but often as partners in transactions on the basis of contracts that allow for limited social trust with an expectation of monetary return in exchange for a legally provided product or service.
Or could say, needing to earn money often pushes people to get to know more people.
Ours is a connection reality, which pushes people to find connections outside of family, and outside of local community, which can be trying in many ways. But overall is why human civilization is as successful as it is.
Without monetary incentive people can be more insular. Communities can be more closed. Children can remain dependent on family even as they grow into adulthood with little option to escape that dependency.
Money frees far more than it entangles. It gives opportunity more than it takes it. And it can help so many to go so many places they otherwise would never go.
So yeah I write these things also for myself. And I read and re-read and ponder, as I shift my perspective and work harder to do better in my own life. Is hard, but am getting there am sure. Writing out such things helps me understand them.

When ideas should pay
One of the things I like to do is give away ideas for the good of people all over planet Earth, which is why I know they are to be given away. Because my own assessment is that money at its best is for when you do a favor for a stranger on a contract basis, where everything is legal, of course.
And I'm on planet Earth, so am I doing anyone a favor if I think ideas can help the planet? Nope. Stuck here with everybody else until can build a starship...yeah I would like to build a starship. Don't know how yet. But not really stuck as think SO much progress has been made by our species, and we're just getting started really as things are making more sense, which also seems to give a greater sense of despair for many. It's like we can sense what is possible, and want it now.
So to me ideas SHOULD pay if those ideas can be part of products or services which are legally provided for strangers on a contract basis which may be written but not necessarily, without having an overriding community benefit, especially if global.
To me the assertion despite its simplicity is increasingly fascinating. The basic ideas embodied are ones have puzzled over for a few years now to get to that form of expressing.
My favorite example lately is the convenience store.
Ever wonder why prices of items in convenience stores can be so much higher than elsewhere? You're seeing the price of the convenience.
Convenience stores are FULL of ideas that pay, and yes, you may know the store owner, but even if that person is at the register taking your money as payment back for the favor of items conveniently placed there for you, how many of you are going to really get to know that person?
Please don't try after reading. Would be odd and awkward am sure. Convenience store owners all over the world wondering what happened? Why are all these customers trying to get to know me?
But you see, you can get that value from a stranger for one reason only--money.
Money facilitates limited social trust. Letting you get the favor of ideas where who knows who figured them out or when, at your convenience, and the money is a social IOU backed by society to pay that person back at a later time.
Without money? There is no modern civilization.

Relief in community perspective
To me one way the web can test you is when you get the vague idea you should be making more money somehow, or worse you talk about a few things and have people who will TELL you as if is some absolute. Like they know.
Much to my relief a few years back motivated to work out how it all works, realized that much of what I do helps the global community without any reason to expect money in it. Whew.
So how do I think it works really to make money? I explained my guesses in detail in a post, but gist of it is, you have some form of upfront contract, and exchange legal goods or services, like your physical or mental labor, in exchange for money. Where I say money is just a social IOU, backed by society. For example the US dollar is backed by the US Government.
So yeah worrying about my own situation pushed me to study money in-depth and conclude it really wasn't explained well to me before! And with my own admitted musings was surprised simple explanations seemed to fit reality.
Of course they are MY ideas and I like them. Others are sufficiently warned that am just some guy musing along.
Oh, feel a need to also push some of my thoughts on promotion as well. To me LOTS of what you see on the web helps promote something and should not be paid for, like if someone is trying to sell me something and am checking it for quality, why should I pay for it first? Makes no sense.
Yes, there are lots of ways to make money. And yup, posted about when to charge, in my opinion.
Gist of that opinion is that you should charge when have an upfront contract to legally provide products or services to a stranger, not for community reasons. That is how that stranger can pay you back! As with community can be about helping your community without an immediate return on a favor.
But with a stranger, how else can that person pay back for a favor? Money lets that be immediate so that people can take for granted in countries all over the world walking into a strange place and having the favor of an item given to you by a stranger, in exchange for money. That is, you walk into a store and buy something.
But in contrast where is really about much more than a favor, like if you help a starving person with food, such a return is not necessary. Which is not really doing a favor either to me, but about what decent humans should do for each other.
However can create problems for communities figuring out how to pay properly for things NOT about favors either as so much about community, like firefighting, teaching, police work, other government services and yup, political office.
Which to me gets back to community perspective.
Simple approaches attract me.
Though will admit that does not mean they work!
But how much should I emphasize just talking my own ideas here without pretending to be an expert? But just in case, will note am NOT giving legal or monetary advice. Just talking out some ways of looking at money and business that I guess make sense to me.
There are also people who enjoy being out here on the web learning things, and talking a point of view. Doesn't mean am claiming expertise. And am not.

Functionally, how do you make money?
My functional perspective has lead me to look at lots of things in different ways, and have functionally defined money itself, as a social IOU backed by society given in exchange for a favor. Turns out I could even conjecture how money gets into society using the US, where emphasize am just some guy putting out his opinions. Am not claiming to be a money expert, nor should anything here or with any of my writing be construed as monetary advice.
Based on my functional approach, can say, in my opinion, the most socially accepted way to make money is by providing legal products or services to strangers in exchange for socially backed IOU's typically called money.
Like for those who work for someone you maybe could say, you make money from an employer by signing a contract to receive pay in exchange for the favor of your labor. So with employment your labor of some kind, where mental labor counts as labor of course, is the service from this functional perspective.
That "getting a job" involves a contract of some kind, and in my country typically involves a written contract is something that people might kind of not think of often. And went to Wikipedia as often do and found that the article Employment contract covered things best here.
But it also had the following intriguing clarification:
Yeah that's an interesting Wikipedia article to read I think.
That money flows primary through contracts is an opinion that makes sense to me! And the point then is that you typically need some kind of agreement in advance before you will make money.
That is important as in my opinion you can provide something of great value to people who may be thankful for that happening but they are unlikely to owe you any money, unless there was a prearranged agreement. Which I think can surprise people on the web. You can do something that becomes HUGE and not make any money with it.
My functional perspective fascinates me and talking it out can help me to see how well it merges with well, just about anything related.
Here am pondering how it may shift somewhat how I look at making money itself in the large. One thing that did happen is I realized I hadn't thought a lot about the contract aspect to "getting a job" or that it really is providing the favor of one's services in exchange for remuneration. And am intrigued now with a bit of research at the distinction between being employed or self-employed as had realized it existed of course, but hadn't pondered in-depth how the line is drawn.
To me writing things out in this way not only helps me evaluate my own ideas, but also helps me raise further questions and talking it out public?
Well that just helps my meta process.

A contract of employment usually defined to mean the same as a "contract of service".[2] A contract of service has historically been distinguished from a contract for the supply of services, the expression altered to imply the dividing line between a person who is "employed" and someone who is "self-employed". The purpose of the dividing line is to attribute rights to some kinds of people who work for others....

When to charge?
In my opinion whenever a stranger needs something from you that isn't about community, critically important, personal or life and death, then you should both enter into some kind of contract and there should be remuneration from that person. Which is an opinion I'm working through. So the more trivial the thing? Yeah, definitely there should be a fee.
Oh yeah though, you BOTH should see it as trivial, had to edit to add. If you see something as very trivial but to another person it's terribly important then there can be a problem.
The more important the thing? Then other considerations should be involved. Like my favorite example is if someone is dying of thirst. Stranger or no, give them some water!
However, with a business, there should probably always be a fee, unless it's community, and the more important it is to that business, the bigger the fee should be.
That split between human beings and businesses fascinates me and I think it's very hard to get right, and that even massive corporations themselves are screwing up with these kinds of things! Businesses are trying to charge human beings for things they shouldn't and giving things away free to businesses because they do to human beings when they shouldn't, in my opinion.
That messes up monetary flows, cripples economies, and can really mess up people's lives.
In general I think businesses should charge businesses.
Money helps prevent exploitation of people or organizations, as you get an equal exchange at the point of transaction versus relying on goodwill going forward. That is, you don't just do someone a favor and wait and see if they'll return it, when there is a proper exchange involving money. Of course the monetary system can fail many ways, but optimally it protects people.
Putting out things I'm pondering helps me ponder them. That does not mean these opinions are definitely correct. But it's my blog so I can put them here.

Thoughts on stranger economy
For me it has been a huge big deal to think of money as being a tool to return a favor to a stranger for something done for you or for something you receive. Like you go to a coffee shop--one of my favorite examples--and a stranger will happily give you a tasty cup of well-brewed coffee, in exchange for some money.
So why emphasize "stranger" and "favor"? Well imagine a very giving community, which freely shares with strangers who simply take, without giving anything back, like food. And imagine that these nice people find they are running out of food themselves! Suddenly that scenario can be more than about morals or what's right, it can be functionally dangerous for that community.
In contrast consider someone within a very close community, who does something for someone within that community. For such a person such a thing can just be part of being a healthy member without concern about an immediate return. And in fact, supporting the community supports everyone. So such support functionally does not lead to lack or need.
So our world has a system, where if you have a contract of some kind, where you have something a stranger wants, and agree to provide it, then you can get money in exchange, which is a social IOU promising a return on that favor, later.
And it works great!
Our modern world exists because of this system, but it helps to understand it, which is why I talk it out so much because I got frustrated years ago out here wondering how things I was doing were supposed to pay off.
Now I think I know some important things like, contracts are usually required.
Generally if you're going to make money, some kind of arrangement has to be established ahead of time. So no, just throwing something up on the web as I've often done is unlikely to work, unless I guess you DO draw vast amounts of attention, but even then you need something in place, like that will show ads, I guess. To me that's a generally held idea which I've never personally verified to be true.
But money is just one reason to put things out here. There are many others.
Importantly I learned that community is a great reason.
Which means that you can also see the world now as a global community, and can do things for that community, without any expectation of any money in return.
And that's mostly it. Part of me wants to make a long post and link to things where I discuss more in-depth my OPINIONS on these things. But people can find those things if interested.
So I like to call the modern world economy--the stranger economy.
It really is designed in my opinion so that strangers can do things for each other without fear of being exploited, which may sound odd to some.
But when used properly, money lets people interact with strangers in a way that is mutually beneficial. So you can travel the world, and buy that cup of coffee, in so many places, from so many people. Personally knowing them? Not required.

Where news business will go
Not one who shrinks from putting up an opinion though I also feel I work things out with theory to get to it, I'm willing to just say where I think the news industry must go as a business in order to make money.
First off, where it was involved advertising, which people tolerated as much as anything. And reality is, like on the frontiers of the US back in the 1800's that newspaper could be a lifeline. You could crave information and advertising opened up possibility as well as tried to sell you things.
While today I say you figure out that news was valuable to you, after you read it. And that eventually you'll get a chance to pay after.
And that's it. In my vision, someday when you read an article on some news site after you've finished at the bottom there might be a button with some small amount on it, and you can just hit that button and pay for the read, or not. That is, say directly that you found that information valuable.
My guess is that people in the news industry if they even came across this post would automatically say that no one would pay. I say they're focused on the rear view mirror and haven't even really checked if there is another way.
Yes, for quite some time news and advertising worked together one way. Now I think a new way will have to emerge.
Which is not to knock advertising as I believe that outside of news, advertising will be bigger than ever, especially in entertainment, where it will be most focused.
And those are opinions of mine and will be curious to see what actually happens.

Finding your passion, my reality
When I was younger read an important book that told me to do what I love and the money would follow. And now I'm like, um, think it should have been more something like: figure out a product or service you enjoy doing which other people want, and establish a decent contract clearly outlining and limiting your obligations as well as those of the other contractual party.
See? Kind of the same thing?
Finding your passion is great! But making money is a process.
